The week Liberalism fell.
July 1st 2024
This past week has been remarkable. Beginning with the usual left-wing news about Trump, and a possible election mis-call in France the events of the week seriously devolved for the Democrats in the United States, and the generally leftist views in many other parts of the world. In fact, this slide really began with the elections for the European Union the week prior in which the right wing gained a majority in the European parliament for the first time since its inception.
The debate on Thursday evening (June 27th) revealed a sitting President that is no longer mentally fit for the job. That being a revelation for so many people on the left, and a demonstration confirming suspicions so many people on the right already held, suddenly dominated world news. Not just American news, but world-wide everyone was discussing the ramifications (to them) of an American President that, clearly, could no longer string two sentences together without losing his focus.
The layers; Primaries already mainly done with no further opportunity to select another individual democratically to fulfill the role of presidential nominee for the Democratic Party for the next election (in November 2024). After that debate performance, the Democrats in the United States no longer have a viable candidate. Next, the sitting President has revealed he is not mentally fit to continue to do the task, sometimes. Next, what if he did win the nomination, then the election? Nobody alive believes he is fit to govern for another four-year term. Next, Trump. The effects emanating from the debate make not just the United States a more complex place right now, but the entire planet. What does this mean for the war in Israel and Gaza? What does it mean about a possible war between Israel and Lebanon? What is the effect on the Russian-Ukrainian war? World leaders just realized they cannot depend on President Biden. If someone like President Zelensky was to phone him up to ask for more Air Defense missiles (for example) President Biden might not remember who he is, literally, let alone where he is calling from or the intricacies of the situation he is in over in the middle of Ukraine.
Section three, or section four (if needs be) of the Twenty-fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution needs to be invoked as soon as possible. If you are reading this now, and are not familiar with those articles, go do your homework right now.
The hits just kept coming this week though.
In France, a left-wing governed country since the end of World War II is electing a right-wing government for what would essentially be the first time in its modern history. The people there, as the people of so many nations around the world are doing this year, are rejecting the left-wing policies on the economy, climate questions, security and defense and most especially, immigration. There are other issues as well, but mainly the point is voters all over the world have started to say ‘no more’ … The high taxes required to support these policies; the radical change in the make-up of our societies with current immigration policies; the vulnerability being seen after naked aggression from Russia, North Korea, China, Iran and numerous non-state actors (I.e. terrorists) is making the world enormously unstable. It has been Liberals in countries all over the world that have led the population of the entire planet to the precipice. These elections in the EU, France, the upcoming elections in the United States and Canada (This year? Next Year?) are all resulting in the same outcome. The left is out, and the shift back to the right is underway.
Hits though …. They still kept coming.
The Supreme Court of the United States has dropped a ruling today that (former) President Trump does indeed have immunity for deeds done while he was still sitting as the President. Including specifically, and this is the key element of the ruling … that the immunity a President has prohibits anyone from even questioning why he has done certain things. The “intent” may not be questioned.
Intent. In law, in Latin, this is known as Mens Rea. A four thousand year old concept is that you need to demonstrate the accused had the intent to break the law in some action they undertook to do. It has always been a difficult concept to prove because it requires that proof of what the accused was thinking needs to be provided. An all but impossible thing to prove factually.
This ruling, combined with Biden’s inept and somewhat sad performance during the debate and the near inability to change anything before the Democratic National Convention this summer, all but ensure a Trump victory in this fall’s election. Combined with other right wing shifts around the world, the entire planet now seems to be sitting firmly on the right and changes one might expect to left-wing policies implemented in recent years, becomes all but certain. This will persist for some time too as the next president in the United States is likely to be in a position to appoint at least one more, possibly two more Justices to the Supreme Court during his or her tenure. If that is to be Trump, then those are to be right-leaning judges.
Bleeding heart liberal policies of appeasement, liberal characteristics tending toward that of apologists, and liberal tendencies toward pacifism are causing more damage world-wide during the last fifteen or more years than American and European liberals did in the lead-up to World War II. It is World War III that we are all lurching toward with ever increasing momentum and perhaps; just perhaps; this has been averted before the shooting gets out of control.
It will take some time before the left-wing media adapts to the new reality that their views are very much in the minority these days. Gun laws. Immigration policies. Oil and Gas production. Economic priorities. Foreign relations. Climate policy. Defense spending. Even more local topics like bicycle lanes and affordable housing (left-wing darlings they are) are all about to do a right turn because what has been attempted by the left in recent years with any of these issues has not worked and has even, demonstrably, made many things much worse. Spin. Fake news. Differing truths. People are just not buying what liberals are selling anymore.
Something else that has been going on for several years now, and is this week at fever pitch, is casting the ‘Right’ (conservatives, generally speaking) as “Hard Right” or “Far Right” … i.e. extremists. This trope is getting old for a lot of people because most people are not extremists, but simply occupy the other side of the political dividing line from the left. Point of fact most conservatives, like their liberal counter-parts on the left, actually sit very close to the center of the political spectrum. It is a small minority on both sides that occupy the extreme edges and that larger centric majority (left or right) always resents being cast as extreme. However this is being done at full volume by the left as they whine about their losses in elections, and courts, and in conversations in sidewalk cafes, this week now.
Refining immigration policy and simply requiring anyone arriving at the border to present themselves at a legal border crossing is not the end of the universe. Implementing rational and sustainable economic policy as a priority over idealism is not going to be the end of the world. Taking your family on a road-trip in a car this summer is not going to cause the ice-caps to melt any faster than they already were (and therefore lead to the end of civilization). None of these left-wing story lines from recent years is sustainable anymore.
You could say that the debate revealed the King has no clothes, but, the debate performance and the performance of the left in recent years reveals that it is Liberals more generally that have no clothes. Everyone has seen through the charade now, and even the true-believers of the DNC in the U.S.A., and over in the EU, and even amongst the French Bourgeoisie are finally looking inward and asking the question “What have we done”? (Well, technically it would be “Qu’avons-nous fait” over there) But it is too late to reverse course now. They all must now lie in the bed they have made.
As for the bed that is still to be made though, let us not forget that we are all going to need to live with our present day decisions, tomorrow. Let us take these decisions with great care now.
Edit: July 12th: Since writing this, France did not elect a Right-Wing government in the end, but the left did lose a ton of ground and the right leaning parties now have influence they have not held since WWII. Also, President Biden referred to President Zelensky (of Ukraine) as President Putin (of Russia) during a N.A.T.O. news conference (an error I predicted would occur early in this article. The error came less than two weeks after this article was published). In that same news conference, President Biden also referred to the moment when he appointed Vice-President Trump as the Vice-President. In that moment he did not even realize the critical mistake he had made. That is the problem.
Edit, July 17th: More hits have kept coming in. On the weekend a deeply troubled individual took a shot at former President Trump, winging his ear and narrowly missing his head in the process. That must count as a hit against democrats and Biden as the left-wing rhetoric against Trump in recent years and especially recent months and weeks made this probable at some point. Biden has literally said that Trump should be put in the Bulls-eye. Biden tripped over his own shoe laces in yet another TV interview too, doing nothing with his own words to save himself. And today, a few hours ago, it is announced he had Covid-19 on top of all his other ills. One more thing too .. a Democratic Senator was (also) convicted of 19 criminal counts of fraud, and acting as a foreign agent. If all of this is not yet a decline of Liberalism (I am of course saying it is mind you), certainly the moral high ground has been ceded.
Edit: November 6th 2024. Republicans (Conservative, right-wing) under Donald Trump, have now regained both the presidency and the Senate in last nights elections.
Edit, February 22nd 2025: Germany has now elected a right of center parliament for the first time since WWII.
